My Background:

  • I have over 32 years of experience in researching family history.
  • I do all the research myself.
  • As part of my own research, I have discovered relatives in Australia, New Zealand and United States, contacted them and attended a family reunion in Wyoming, USA.
  • Individually, I have traced my father’s direct line back to the late 1700s, and my mother’s direct line back to the 1600s.
  • Most of the research is undertaken online, with most of my work being UK based. Plus, over the years many countries have put their records online which has made researching abroad more accessible.
  • I am based in Sandbach, Cheshire, though I am originally from Goole in Yorkshire where my parents and 3 of my grandparents were from.
  • When I first started investigating my roots back in 1993 my father and all my grandparents were deceased which left me with only my mother to gather information from. Her answer to one of my first questions asking for the names of her grandparents was “Grandpa and Grandma Isle”. The fact that both her father and her grandfather had identical forenames came as a surprise to her!
  • There were no online records when I started which meant I spent many hours in the local reference libraries and area records offices trawling through microfilmed census returns and parish records and the General Register Indexes which were on micro-fiche.
  • Even now with many millions of records available online it can be difficult to identify the correct information and I can spend quite some time eliminating other possibilities to arrive at the correct person. Unfortunately this sometimes leads to a brick wall dead end.
